Beyond the Bullets and Blood: A Veteran’s Story Philadelphia – American troops who risk their lives in Iraq are widely respected and supported by their fellow citizens. But over 35 years ago, dedicated soldiers answered their country’s call to a different war only to return, physically and emotionally scarred, to the scorn of many Americans. In this compelling new book, Serving Under Adverse Conditions: Wars and the Aftermath (now available through AuthorHouse), Tyrone T. Dancy details the trauma of living through hell and the nightmarish years that followed his return to the United States. Dancy not only faced the same dangers every soldier experienced in the tropical jungles of Southeast Asia. As an African-American, he also faced the cruel enemy of racism, even while serving in the name of freedom. The book draws parallels between the growing Civil Rights movement and black pride in the United States with escalating racial tensions of those on active duty in Vietnam. Serving Under Adverse Conditions takes readers to the frontlines of a bloody firefight in which Dancy witnessed the gruesome deaths of several comrades and suffered more than 15 wounds in an explosion that left him nearly bleeding to death from shrapnel that ripped through his body. From there, he delves into the war’s deep impact on all soldiers, but particularly on blacks who suffer alienation, ridicule and hostility from Caucasians and African-Americans alike. He takes the readers into the present as they follow his crusade to create an annual public day of honor for African-American soldiers and veterans. He also offers personal insight into what makes true heroes, explains his feelings on how the media distorts reality and reveals what he refers to as “terrorism before 9/11.” A personal story of fortitude, courage and survival that is as relevant today as it was nearly half a century ago, Serving Under Adverse Conditions is a deeply thought provoking look at war’s devastating effects. He earned numerous awards for his tour of duty and continued service to the veteran’s community, Dancy received the Bronze Star for Heroism with the “V” for Valor, the Purple Heart, the Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award and the 1999 Congressional Black Caucus Veteran’s Braintrust Award. In 1977, he began his career a disabled veteran’s outreach program specialist with the State Labor Department of Pennsylvania and was eventually promoted to Local veterans’ employment representative. He provided employment assistance and counseling to thousands of clients until his retirement in 2002. In 1995, he self-published War Aftermath Depose, and is currently working on a revised edition of this book (available Spring 2006 through AuthorHouse). For the past 14 years Dancy has host and produced a radio broadcast, “The Veterans hour Radio Magazine”, which airs on WDAS-AM 1480 Philadelphia. He celebrated his 130th program in November 2004.
